Fran was a young married women who partook in President Eisenhower’s People to People project which encouraged international pen pals. She was matched with young Dulcie, also a young married woman who lived in Queensland, Australia. Fran hailed from Detroit, Michigan and bravely wrote the first letter.The letters lasted from 1957-1981 and Fran kept her letters from Dulcie over the years. She decided to send them to Author Victoria Tweed who has a small publishing company and thus, the book, Dear Fran, Love Dulcie was borne. Tweed and her husband interpreted and edited Fran’s letters, so the reader gets to see Dulcie’s life on a farm in Australia.Dulcie’s parents had raised her to do both women and men’s work and we see her working the farmland and still holding down the household chores in the 100-degree weather. We see she and her husband, Len doing backbreaking work, day in and day out. Dulcie had many heartbreaking losses along the way, but she never lost her ability to find some humor and small forms of entertainment such as family gatherings, piano playing and certainly detailed letter-writing to an American woman that never meets in person.Though there are only letters from Dulcie, we do get glimpses into Fran’s family life from some of Dulcie’s responses. They kindle a strong bond and hold hands during many historical events such as the advent of the television, political elections, and major world events such as Mt. St. Helens’ eruption.Then, the letters stop coming and Fran believes that Dulcie has passed on from a final message she has received. I can't say much about the book, as I don't want to give away any spoilers, but all I can tell you is READ THIS BOOK. If you only read one book a year, make it this one. I couldn't put it down: I read it in less than two days. This isn't just the story of one woman's life, it's an important part of social history, and is just captivating. Do I recommend it? Unreservedly. Dulcie and her story will stay with me for a long time. Thanks to Fran for keeping the letters for all these years, and to Victoria for compiling them into this incredible book.
