There is not a person in this family to like. They are all annoying, from Larry with his narcissistic personality disorder, to the over-dramatic Margo, the killing-animals-for-fun Lesie, the spineless mother who cannot keep order nor stand up for herself, and lastly to Gerry, who kills insects for collection, traps animals and tries to keep them as pets. If you like overly long descriptions of flora and fauna, you may enjoy the book. But since nothing much had happened in the first half of the book (aside from setting fire to a beam in the rental villa and apparently not fixing the damage done), I quit reading. I do wish Kindle offered refunds. While I wouldn't classify this as a great book, it is a very endearing book. I have read it many times and always enjoy it thoroughly. Years ago I read it out loud to my son and we would laugh so hard we could barely get through a chapter. My son is now 52! After these many years havinggiven away many copies, I was delighted to be able to get it on my Kindle and read it once again. I find it has lost none of it's enchantment overthe years, in fact, because it of a simpler time, it may be even more enjoyable. By getting to know the young Gerald Durrell and his unusual andcharming family, it is easy to see how he became such an animal expert and conservator.
